BRINGING THE WYETHS TO PARIS: A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT CURATING AN INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION

Ruth L. A. Stiff, curator of International Exhibitions at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, will address the wide array of challenges she faced in mounting a major exhibition. These include the sourcing of the content from numerous public and private lenders; the safe passage of artwork across international borders; and the careful display of the works with an eye towards cross-cultural sensitivities. In the exhibition, “The Wyeths: Three Generations of American Art,” at the Mona Bismarck American Center for Art and Culture in Paris, Stiff showcased the prodigious talent of one of America’s foremost artistic families and advanced French appreciation of these quintessentially American works, largely unknown to the French public. Stiff will take us through the labyrinthine preparations required to produce an exhibition of this complexity.
