CURRENT DAY ISSUES PLAGUING NATIVE AMERICANS

There are 574 federally recognized tribes in the United States. A federally recognized tribe is an American Indian or Alaska Native tribal entity that is recognized as having a government-to-government relationship with the United States. Victoria Ferguson, a native of Beckley, WV, and graduate of Marshall University, is a Monacan Indian and has been a manager and interpreter at Natural Bridge, VA, since 1999. Although individual tribes have their own issues, there are some concerns that cross tribal lines. Ferguson will look at education, health care, land loss, and poverty, and how these issues affect present day Native Americans. Ferguson’s family history and stories will add a personal spin to the Native American story often overlooked.
